The Taieri is a long low flow river that rises in the central otago region flowing through a variety of terrain from easy open sections to inaccessible gorges. The Strath Taieri section offers anglers willow lined, rock to shingle beds with pools and runs. Fish are plentiful throughout its length, with brown trout being the most predominant. A spinning line tends to be the most popular but fly and worm will also yield good results.

Novice or Amateur the Taieri offers fishing for all, we can help arrange licenses, rods and picnic lunches and with Longford Retreat set less than 150m from the water’s edge it is dream getaway for those keen on fishing.

Why not catch Taieri Gorge Train, departing daily from the Dunedin the train takes you on a journey through rugged and spectacular Taieri Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and tunnels that were hand carved over 100 years ago. Walks and Rides

The rocks station offers some amazing walks in the surrounding countryside and for a small amount of effort will yield stunning views of the Rock and Pillar range, Smooth Cone hill, the Taieri river and the Strath Taieri valley. Schist rock outcrops which raise out of the tussock (tors) make this landscape truly unique.

If walking not your thing then take a mountain bike. There is some truly amazing countryside easily accessible by bike.

Photography The Strath Taieri valley offers those that are keen on photography an amazing opportunity to capture a truly unique landscape. Bring your camera - you will not be disappointed.
